Today’s lesson in learning english is on three persons in English and pronouns. Whether you’re writing an essay, telling a story, giving a speech, or holding a conversation, the correct use of “person” in English ensures your message is understood as you intend.

English has three grammatical persons, namely: First person, Second person, and Third person.
First, second, and third person are ways of describing points of view.
First person is the I/we perspective.
Second person is the you perspective.
Third person is the he/she/it/they perspective.

Each three persons in English plays a different role in communication, and mastering them is essential for correct sentence construction.

1. First Person

The first person is used when the speaker is talking about himself. It reflects a personal point of view—the speaker is directly involved in the action or the subject being discussed.

Singular Form:  “I”.

Example: I love reading books.

Plural Form: “we”: it’s used when the speaker is talking about themselves and others.

Example: We are going to the market.

In both cases of three persons in English, the speaker is included in the subject. First-person pronouns also include “me,” “my,” “mine,” “us,” “our,” and “ours.”

2. Second Person

The second person is used when the speaker is addressing someone else directly. It is the point of view used to speak to someone.

Singular and Plural:  “you” for both.

Example (singular): You are my best friend.

Example (plural): You all did a great job.

Even though “you” stays the same whether speaking to one person or many, the context usually makes it clear. Other forms include “your” and “yours.”

The second person of three persons in English is common in conversations, instructions, commands, and persuasive writing. It creates a direct and engaging tone.

3. Third Person

The third person is used when the speaker is talking about someone or something else—neither the speaker nor the listener is the subject.

Singular Forms:

Pronouns include “he” (for males), “she” (for females), “it” (for things, animals, or unknown gender).

Example: He is playing football.
She sings beautifully.
It is raining.

Plural Form:  “they” (for people or things).

Example: They are watching a movie.

Other forms of third-person pronouns include “him,” “her,” “his,” “hers,” “its,” “them,” “their,” and “theirs.”

The third person is commonly used in storytelling, reports, academic writing, and any situation where the speaker is not involved in the action.
